Should I tell my doctor I illegaly took a painkiller and ask him for stronger ones?

tramadol without prescription
abc a asked:

I posted a question a while ago about asking my doctor for pills about back pains…next time I went in he prescribed me a trial of Tramadol, which in the end did absolutely nothing. It takes forever to get an appointment with him, and I go back to see him this Wednesday. My friend just recently had mouth surgery, and he offered me one of his vicodin to help my pain. I took it, a whole pill (he said half of one helped his surgery pain), and it didn’t do anything at all for my pain. My question is, should I tell my doctor that I took it and it didn’t help? I mean, it is illegal to take the vicodin without a prescription, but it’d be pointless if he ended up offering me vicodin if I know it didn’t work at all…any suggestions?
I took the Tramadol at 300mg doses once a day, which he said was pretty much the highest it should go. I’ve been off of that for about 2 weeks before I took this Vicodin, so I think it should be okay as far as mixing goes. But I guess I’ll just tell him, there’s suppose to be that whole “doctor-patient confidentiality” right?

when you are dealing with your doctor, you NEED to tell him/her what they need to know. don’t leave things out because you are worried or embarrassed. its much more important that they know what they are dealing with. the worst that is going to happen is the doctor may tell you not to do that and/or they may recommend you get help with that if you need it. the doctor wont turn you into the police so don’t worry about that. i work at a hospital and with patients that aren’t honest and it makes for situations that can be dangerous or possibly deadly. tell the doctor what it is you took so he/she knows about it because what the doctor prescribes may not be compatible with what you took and that can cause serious problems.

Did you try two tramadol, that is what my doctor had me do for my knee. But you have to be sure to stay ontop of the pain. Take two then at 4 hours take one or two more. I wouldn’t go taking other peoples presciptions. Because you don’t know the interactions and all that stuff. Just be careful with this stuff or any pain pills, they are easy to get addicted to. That’s why I hate taking them and really don’t much.

NO, as a nurse i will tell you what will happen if you do this
number 1, he will see as drug seeker
and number 2, never ask for a drug by name
tell him about your pain how the tramadol didnt’ work
it is Illegal it says so on the bottle to take other medications
welll now you are stuck so if he writes you a RX for the vicodin you will have to just go home with that and wait till the next appt
to tell him it didn’t work
or you can tell him you had dental work yourself in the past
and it didn’t help so the dr had to come back to the office to pick up anotther one
DON”T offer the name, he will ask you what it was called
Act like you are thinking of the name,
say i think it was percot or something like that.
good luck and hope you learned a leason there
i am not preaching to you as i have done some not so smart things that have backed me into a corner more than once.
so good luck and by the way keep a diary of your pain
like what time, what you did to try and get rid of it and bring it to your appt
    to to www,painfoundation.com
    had one you can download
    great site also
let the doc know you are taking Motrin 600mg 3-4 times a day
and you are putting heat pad on it , hot showers laying down etc.
let him know you are trying

Your friend broke the law not you. You are not supposed to give or sell prescription drugs to anyone other than yourself.

I doubt if your Doc would make a fit about it though it happens more often than you would realize.

    1) If you are in pain, the Doc will squeeze you in somewhere, they normally keep a few appointements for this purpose.

    2) Taking any drug not prescribed for you is illegal…and stupid (say if your friend gave you something and you croaked??, your friend winds up in the pokie..and yeah it happens heaps!!) - Don’t take sh’t that isn’t prescribed for you!!. If something doesn’t work tell your Doc and he will modify the dose or prescribe something else.

    3) If you have chronic pain you should be sent to a pain clinic. They will be able to assess your pain and prescibe a treatment for the long haul) - You may want to ask for a referal. Narcotics are not the answer for pain lasting more than a few weeks, you will become tolerant to them and will they cease to work. Don’t forget too that these drugs are addictive. My opinion is they are way over-prescribed in the US.

Oh and if someone says ‘oh it’s your buddy breaking the law’…ummm..no that’s crap ..you both are. The minute you accpet a drug from another, you are guilty of posession and the minute you take it, you cop a ‘use’. Not that I think your Doc will put you in it for admitting it, but he will thing you’re an idiot for taking things that aren’t meant for you

If you are not honest with your doctor it will only harm you. I have been on a pain management program for several years and have found that being honest with them is the only way they can help you. When I first started I admitted to them that I had been on heroin for the pain and it never stopped me from getting medications

Instead of just telling the doctor you want stronger meds try this.

Start a daily journal of your pain. Nothing fancy, I use a notebook. Everyday record:
    When you hurt
    Where you hurt
    How badly you hurt (1-10)
and how the pain is effecting your everyday life. What is it allowing you to do or not to do.

Take it with you to the doctor with you or write a summary. It’s hard to communicate with your doctor when you only have a few minutes to talk and are nervous about being there anyway.

The journal will give your doctor more and better information so he can treat your problem.

Here are a few links that may help you

    Good luck

Transfering prescriptions is illegal in many places, but you would have to check your local regulations to be sure.

Aside from the legality, yes you do need to tell your doctor that you borrowed and took that pill, whether it worked or not. The fact that you took it speaks to a larger issue that your doctor needs to address.
